The closure of the Szerencs sugar factory in 2008 was a big loss for locals; engineer Zoltán Durbász, the last worker to leave the factory, talks about history and the reasons leading to the closure of what was one of Europe’s largest sugar factories in the 19th century.

In Golop –The Golop railway station reminded Hungarian University of Fine Arts students immediately of the famous film ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’. To create their installation, they combined the film’s atmosphere with a view of the neighbouring cooperage’s stacks of drying oak staves. In addition to the installation, they renovated and decorated the station’s outdoor toilets creatively using gifts from the local Golop community. People from Tarcal love football. Tarcal County SC plays in county 2nd division, with a match every second Sunday attended by 150-200 fan club members. METU architecture students came up with the idea of building a roof comprised mostly of a mix of earth and concrete over the pitch-side spectator seating.

The grape trellis was installed in the Szegi communal park close to the village hall, a popular meeting point for the community’s young people. The frame on the 48 columns provides shade while the seven stools are somewhere to rest, talk and gaze around.

Students from Széchenyi István University were brave enough to rewrite the story of the founding of a village mostly inhabited by the Swabian community: Rátka. Once upon a time, there was an egg of uncertain origin, which soon developed into an oversized rooster. Ever since then, Rátkakas the rooster has spread its protective wings over the village. The architecture students were inspired to place the installation on a reclaimed area that used to be a mine, now a landfill. Thus, Rátka has been enriched with a resting place and a super rooster totem.

Hence, students from Szent István University’s Landscape Faculty chose this location for their installation, which provides a place for contemplation and discussion.
