The koi carp (in Japanese nisikigoi) has a similar form to the word expressing love and affection, so the koi is the symbol of love and friendship in Japan. Since the 1820s, the coast of the Niigata Prefecture has been the breeding ground for all the colour variations of the koi carp, became a symbol of nobility which within fifty years. Their patterns and colours are worthy of admiration, so much so that today they are known as the Living Jewels of the Orient.
When creating the sake packaging, the designers endeavoured to pay attention to every small detail. The white porcelain bottle, the koi-inspired design is eye-catching in itself, not to mention the fact that the shape of the Niigata Prefecture is hidden among the silhouettes. However, it becomes whole together with its box, which perfectly reproduces the shape of the koi carp. Whether you are a sake lover or not, why not take a swim with the Nisikigoi after a gruelling day – in moderation, of course.
