Calligraphy (derived from two Greek words: καλλος, kallos meaning beauty and γραφος, grafos meaning writing) literally means ornate, beautiful (hand)writing and its practice on an artistic level. Calligraphy generally covers regular and neat handwriting or script writing which have many varieties but all of them are currently disappearing.
I love this product line because even if it is not an Arts and Crafts movement production, this is what it evokes.
The representatives of the movement intentionally left some works of art unfinished in order to emphasize the beauty of handmade pieces and thus they could achieve a stronger and more rustic effect. The movement did have some sentimental, socialist overtones, too which focused on the feelings of happiness and contentedness resulting from craftsmanship which had been pushed more and more to the background after industrial, mechanical mass production took over.
I am not under the delusion that this packaging could have been made without the use of machines, still, the calligraphy is really pleasing to the eye. What is more, in addition to its ornamental functions, the meanings of the words strengthen the feeling the brand evokes. I like that the champagne bottle has been made with all the colours to harmonize with the various products. It combines the traditions of artistic handwriting with today’s trends in a graceful and easily understandable way.
